Back to The Future is Back - In Musical Form

The 1985 cult classic film ‘Back to the Future’ starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly is returning for its conversion into a musical. The theater performance is expected to premier in London in 2015 and will portray the time-traveling teenager McFly as he ventures from the 1980s back to the 1950s.

Theater Director Jamie Lloyd and Producer Colin Ingram are working in coordination with the director of the film, Robert Zemeckis, and writer Bob Gale to create a new book for the London production. Alan Silvestri, the composer of the score for the original movie, will also write new music for the theater version with lyrics by Glen Ballard. Iconic songs heard in the film are to be included as well, like Huey Lewis’s “Power of Love” and Mr. Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.”

While still keeping some of those original elements, Mr. Lloyd also said in a statement that he plans to make the performance one-of-a-kind. “Rather than recreate such an iconic movie onstage,” said Lloyd, “we have assembled a brilliant artistic team to discover a unique theatrical language to take audiences on a journey through time in a vibrant, unexpected way.”

He also mentioned that the production will consist of “illusions, skateboarding and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience.”

The three “Back to the Future” films grossed more than $900 million at the box office, but so far the team of directors and producers are keeping the focus on the first musical before considering stage versions of the movie’s other two sequels.
