Canadian Beverage Company Develops New Alcoholic Sports Drink

Now why didn’t we think of that? Our neighbors to the north just might be onto something with the Canadian beverage company Vampt’s new creation of a low-calorie, high-protein “recovery ale” in a post-workout beverage called Lean Machine.

Reportedly Lean Machine Ale contains 7 vitamins, 7 grams of protein and 77 calories per serving, plus the 0.5 percent alcohol by volume. The sale of the beverage to the general public hasn’t begun yet, but when it is ready it will be sold in slim, 12oz. cans.

 



Worried about the idea of a gym hangover? A study published in last December’s International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that alcohol’s dehydrating effect could be counteracted with electrolyte content. By lowering the alcohol by volume to 2.3 percent and adding salt, beer was shown to hydrate a sample of athletes better than traditional ale.

Plus, the natural nutrients in beer’s barley, hops and yeast are things not found in your average sports drink. Company founder Ian Toews revealed the motivation behind Lean Machine, saying, “We just thought that maybe we could do something that would support a drinker, make it socially fun, and help them accomplish what needs to be accomplished after an aggressive workout.”

If the drink ever hits America, one can only imagine the effects it might have. Presumably a whole new spectrum of gym rats will surface and who knows, maybe even resolve that obesity epidemic we keep hearing about!
